About the artist

Steve is a local pottery artist based in Lexington, North Carolina, creating wheel-thrown and hand-formed pottery from his home studio. His work includes mugs, bowls, pitchers, vases, lidded vessels, serving pieces, and one-of-a-kind forms that bring warmth and character into everyday spaces.

Steve first studied pottery in Kansas, graduating in 1980. That early foundation in clay stayed with him through a long and meaningful career as a nurse practitioner, where he cared for patients for more than 30 years. After recently retiring, Steve has been able to spend more time in the studio, returning to the rhythm of making by hand.

His pottery studio and kiln are located in the basement of his home in Lexington, NC. There, pieces are thrown, formed, trimmed, glazed, and fired in small batches. The process is personal and hands-on from start to finish, and each piece carries the natural variation that makes handmade pottery unique.

Steve also works part time at the Sawtooth Center in Winston-Salem, NC, keeping him connected to the regional arts community and to others who share a love of clay, craft, and making.

When he is not in the studio, Steve enjoys time with family, his kitties, and his young granddaughter. That same sense of warmth, patience, and care shows up in the work — pottery made not just to be seen, but to be used, held, gifted, and lived with.
